Her phone vibrated from the nightstand. Ignoring the insistent sound, Kara turned on her side, gazing out the window into the dark nothingness of the night. What had her life become? One day, she had it all. The next, she was lying on a strange bed, pregnant, homeless, and with her face beaten to a pulp.

The phone buzzed again. With a sigh, she reached over to grab it, knocking a bottle of water onto the ground. Brenton’s number flashed on the screen.

“Where are you, Kara?”

“Um, hi to you too, Brenton. How are you?” Crossing her legs, she brushed loose strands of hair off her face. A deep sigh sounded down the line.

“I’m well. Extremely worried about you. Where are you? Are you okay?”

“I can’t say where I am at the moment. But I’m okay.”

“What’s going on with you and Jamie?”

Kara pinched the bridge of her nose, not wanting to discuss the intricacies of her failed relationship. She owed it to Brenton, but she didn’t have the courage or the strength to talk about it. “What do you mean?”

“Haven’t you heard? No. I guess you haven’t, seeing as you haven’t been answering my calls.” Another deep sigh emanated from her agent. “Jamie’s in intensive care. He overdosed.”

“What?” Kara pushed herself up and leaned against the wall. She drew her knees to her chest, cradling the phone to her ear. “What do you mean? Is he alright?”

“He’s stable. He overdosed on some fentanyl they found in your house. He’ll probably be released in the next day or so.”

Her stomach twisted in knots. Drugs? In her house? She’d seen traces of white powder before, but thinking it was a once off, had chosen to ignore it. Were there other drugs? Oh, she was so naive.

“Kara, I don’t know what kind of stuff you were into, but it’s not looking good for you.” Brenton’s voice lowered. His tone compassionate, rather than condemning.

“Those drugs weren’t mine,” she said vehemently. “I never took drugs. Not once. I hate drugs. Jamie knew that.”

“Well, it looks like I’ve got some cleaning up to do with the media. Have you seen the headlines?” She knew he would be pacing back and forth in his office, running a hand through his thick silver hair.

“No, Brenton. I haven’t.” Her heart sank as she heard the rustle of paper in the background. Brenton cleared his throat. “Star shoots high. Lovebirds soar on a high together. Merciless actress abandons boyfriend.”

“I … what … he … he beat me!” Kara sputtered, before clasping a hand over her mouth.

“What did you say?”

Closing her eyes, Kara thumped the back of her head against the wall. She hadn’t wanted to tell Brenton. She’d planned on sending him a message to say that she was lying low for a while. By then, her bruises would have healed, and she would have a plan of action in place. There would be no questions asked. No attention drawn to the fact that she was a victim of domestic violence.

“He beat me,” she whispered, clenching her teeth to contain the sob building in her throat.
